St. John's has advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999, thanks to a thrilling 67-65 victory over Kansas. Dylan Darling sank a game-winning layup as time expired, his only successful shot of the contest, to clinch the win.
The Red Storm, seeded fifth, erased a late deficit after Kansas mounted a furious comeback in the final minutes. Despite Kansas tying the game with 13.1 seconds remaining, Darling received the ball and drove for the decisive basket.
Zuby Ejiofor and Bryce Hopkins led St. John's with 18 points apiece. The team, under coach Rick Pitino, has been dominant, winning 21 of its last 22 games. They will now face top-seed Duke in the East Region semifinals.
Kansas, the fourth seed, was led by Darryn Peterson's 21 points. The Jayhawks were unable to replicate their success from their 2022 national championship run, failing to reach the Sweet 16.
