Planet Out of Balance: Red Alert for Climate
23 Mar
Summary
- Earth's climate is more out of balance than ever recorded.
- The last 11 years have been the hottest on record globally.
- Greenhouse gas concentrations are at historic highs.

Scientists have revealed that Earth's climate is experiencing an unprecedented imbalance, with the period from 2011 to 2025 marking the 11 hottest years on record. Last year registered as the second or third hottest, with temperatures 1.43°C above the pre-industrial average. Every major climate indicator is now signaling an urgent crisis.
Greenhouse gas concentrations have reached their highest levels in history, with carbon dioxide at 423 parts per million, significantly exceeding pre-industrial levels. Methane and nitrous oxide are also at their peak in 800,000 years. This excess energy is rapidly warming the planet, with over 90% absorbed by the oceans.
The oceans are experiencing record heat content and an increased frequency of marine heatwaves, impacting marine ecosystems. Sea levels continue to rise at an accelerating rate due to melting ice and thermal expansion, threatening coastal communities worldwide. Glacier mass loss and Arctic sea ice extent are also at alarming lows.
Extreme weather events, including hurricanes, droughts, and floods, are becoming more frequent and severe due to the warmer, energy-rich atmosphere. These shifts also pose risks for the spread of vector-borne diseases like dengue fever into new regions.
The World Meteorological Organization emphasizes that human activities are profoundly disrupting Earth's equilibrium, with consequences lasting for centuries. The acceleration of climate chaos underscores the urgency of global efforts, such as those outlined in the Paris Agreement, to limit temperature increases.
