UK's Largest Oil Field: Green Light for Rosebank?
19 Mar
Summary
- Rosebank, North Sea's largest undeveloped oil site, awaits Energy Secretary's approval.
- The site could produce up to 500 million barrels of oil and gas.
- UK manufacturers urge approval due to high energy costs and security fears.

The Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, must decide whether to grant approval for production to commence at the Rosebank oil field, situated off the coast of the Shetland Islands. This site represents the North Sea's largest undeveloped oil and gas prospect.
Ithaca Energy, the project's owner, indicated that development is nearing its final stages. The Rosebank field is projected to generate as much as 500 million barrels of oil and gas. While the gas output is intended for domestic use, meeting approximately 1% of the UK's needs, the oil will be exported to northern Europe due to the UK's limited refining capacity.
